Every year, plenty of students who were good at GCSE Maths start A-Level Maths and get a bit of a shock.
They got a 7, 8 or 9 at GCSE. Maths was one of their better subjects. Then a few months into Year 12, they’re staring at a page of logarithms or differentiation wondering when Maths became a different language.
A-Level Maths can be hard. But I don’t think that’s a particularly good reason not to choose it. The better question is whether it’s the right kind of hard for you.
A-Level Maths is also one of the most useful subjects you can take. It keeps a huge number of university options open, works brilliantly alongside subjects like Physics, Economics and Computer Science, and gives you a foundation that can take you into everything from engineering to finance.
I’ll tell you what you need to know getting into A-Level Maths.
The biggest difference is that you are expected to do more with what you know. At GCSE, you might learn how to solve a quadratic equation, practise 20 similar questions and become fairly comfortable with the method. At A-Level, the question might not tell you that solving a quadratic is what you need to do.
You have to recognise it yourself.
You’ll meet new material – differentiation, integration, logarithms, exponentials, mechanics and more advanced trigonometry – but you’ll also take familiar topics such as algebra and functions much further.
The topics stop living in their own little boxes. A question can start with a function, require some algebra, move into differentiation and finish by asking you to interpret what your answer actually means.That’s why a student can know every individual method on a revision sheet and still struggle with an exam paper.
The real skill at A-Level is figuring out which Maths to use, and when to use it.
The exact structure depends on your exam board, but A-Level Maths is broadly split between Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics.
Pure Maths is the largest part of the course. This is where you’ll study areas such as algebra, functions, trigonometry, sequences, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration and vectors.
Statistics brings in probability, statistical distributions, hypothesis testing and working with data.
Mechanics applies Maths to motion and forces – things like velocity, acceleration and Newton’s laws.
For students coming straight from GCSE, Pure Maths usually feels like the natural continuation of what they’ve already studied.
If you’re also taking Physics, you’ll probably notice quite a bit of crossover with Mechanics. (If you’re not, don’t panic: you don’t need to take A-Level Physics to understand A-Level Mechanics.)
In 2026, the percentage of students achieving A* or A in A-Level Maths has gone up to 42%, while the percentage of those who passed A-Level Maths (A*-E) is 96%.
Those are strong results for a subject that everyone tells you is impossible. I wouldn’t say that the conclusion is that “A-Level Maths is easy”, but what the results show is that a difficult subject can still be very achievable for the students who put the work in.
There isn’t one national GCSE grade requirement. Sixth forms and colleges set their own entry criteria. But forget the official requirement for a second. I’d be asking a different question:
How comfortable are you with GCSE algebra?
Because Algebra is probably the best warning sign for what comes next. If rearranging equations, factorising, indices, quadratics and manipulating expressions are reasonably comfortable, you’ve got something to build on.
This is one of the strongest arguments for taking it. A-Level Maths isn’t only useful if you want to study a Maths degree. It can be required, preferred or extremely useful for university courses including:
• Engineering
• Physics
• Computer Science
• Economics
• Finance
• Actuarial Science
• Data Science
• Statistics
• Mathematics
• Some Chemistry courses
Keep in mind to always check the entry requirements of the courses you’re interested in at your dream universities before you decide to drop or take up Maths.
I understand that many of you may not be completely sure of what you want to study at university. But if engineering, economics, computing, physics or another quantitative subject is even a possibility, dropping Maths can close doors that are difficult to reopen later.
Further Maths has a slightly terrifying name. It sounds like somebody finished designing A-Level Maths, looked at it and thought, “Not enough Maths.”
But it’s a genuinely interesting option for the right student. Further Maths is a separate A-Level. Rather than simply giving you more practice on standard A-Level topics, it introduces new mathematics and pushes existing ideas much further.
At GCSE, you’ve spent years being told that you can’t take the square root of a negative number. Further Maths says: “Actually, we can. Here’s a new number system. Welcome back.”
That’s the sort of student Further Maths suits, it’s for students who find that idea interesting rather than deeply annoying. If Maths is the subject you genuinely enjoy, you like difficult problems and you’re thinking about a mathematical degree, it’s a valid A-Level subject choice.
For certain degrees and universities, not taking it may limit your options.
If you’re thinking about studying Mathematics at Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial or another highly competitive university, Further Maths is often expected from applicants.
For Engineering, particularly courses such as Aeronautical, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Further Maths isn’t always a formal requirement,but topics like mechanics, matrices, complex numbers and calculus give you a serious head start.
It’s similar for Computer Science. At the most competitive universities, Further Maths can be particularly important because the degree itself is highly mathematical. Discrete mathematics, logic and algorithms are much closer to Further Maths than many students expect.
Then you have Physics, Economics and Actuarial Science. Standard A-Level Maths may satisfy the entry requirements for plenty of courses, but the more mathematical the degree, the more valuable Further Maths becomes.
If you’re considering a highly mathematical degree, check university requirements before deciding against Further Maths.
Here’s what I’d consider before committing to two years of it.
The Pros:
It keeps a lot of university doors open.
This is probably the biggest one. Maths is required for many degrees in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics and Economics, and is valuable for Computer Science, Finance, Data Science and plenty more. If you’re not sure what you want to study yet, Maths gives you options.
It works extremely well with other A-Levels.
Maths and Physics is an obvious combination, but Maths also pairs naturally with Economics, Computer Science, Chemistry and Further Maths. What you learn in one subject can genuinely make parts of another easier.
It’s a subject where practice pays off.
There’s something quite fair about Maths. You can’t waffle your way to an A, but you’re also not completely at the mercy of an essay question. If you understand the material and have done enough problems, you can walk into an exam knowing you’re prepared.
You learn to actually solve problems.
By A-Level, Maths becomes much less about remembering a formula and much more about deciding what to do with the information you’ve been given. That’s useful well beyond the Maths classroom.
The Cons:
The jump from GCSE is real.
Being comfortable with GCSE Maths doesn’t guarantee you’ll find A-Level comfortable. The algebra gets harder, topics start overlapping and questions require much more independent thinking.
You can’t afford to collect gaps.
This is probably the biggest downside. Maths builds on itself. If your algebra is weak, that eventually affects your functions. Then your differentiation. Then your integration. Constant practice to stay on top of your Maths is a must.
The consistent work.
Maths is a terrible subject for the “I’ll sort it out before mocks” approach. You need to actually do questions throughout the year. Not watch someone do them. Not read the worked solution and think yeah, that makes sense. Do them.
It can be frustrating even when you’re good at it.
There will be questions you can’t do immediately. That’s normal. In fact, that’s increasingly the point at A-Level. If you enjoyed GCSE mainly because Maths came easily to you, you’ll have to get comfortable with being stuck occasionally.
Maths is cumulative. The student who fixes a misunderstanding this week has one small problem. The student who ignores it for six months eventually has twelve.
Stay on top of the basics.
Ask when something doesn’t make sense.
Do questions without having the solution sitting beside you.
Don’t panic the first time A-Level Maths makes you feel like you’re bad at Maths.
It’s supposed to be harder than GCSE. That’s why it’s an A-Level.
