The first question I get asked from parents is:
“How much do Breakthrough Maths classes cost?”
In this blog we’re going to break down what it costs per class, what it costs per month, and how it’s a small bit different for people to understand.
More than just traditional tutoring
I think the first thing people need to realise with Breakthrough Maths is it’s very different than traditional tutoring. With tutoring it’s often times face-to-face or one-to-one with a local student or local teacher. That I felt is very expensive and ineffective. A tutor will charge upwards of £50 per hour if not more across the whole of the UK especially around the London area. I’d seen the same problem in Ireland, where I started Breakthrough Maths.
Some tutors are better than others but in general if maths was about being consistent and practising more and more and if you’re limiting yourself to four classes a month, it’s £200 straight up and you’re only getting four hours of maths in. To me, it seemed like we could do better.
And so Breakthrough Maths is a system of learning maths. Every month your child will get 16 classes for a monthly fee of £99 per month. Everything in the class is recorded too so you’ll never miss a class that way. Homework, notes, and every week’s teaching plan are sent to parents on a Sunday.
What’s unique with Breakthrough Maths is we also test students in class. That means you get to see your child’s results every single month and how they’re getting on. We are literally showing you the value all for £99 per month. That’s the equivalent of two standard face-to-face hours with a tutor whereas for us you’re going to get 16 hours per month and all the extras. So it’s immense value.
How Breakthrough Maths compares
I mean when you look at online providers and how Breakthrough Maths compares, we have a very unique model. We own everything so every one of our tutors is an employee of ours. We control everything. We make all the notes and we talk to all the parents. Everything is controlled by us across the UK. Multiple tutoring agencies like MyTutor or Superprof are generally, by and large, a mix of employees and independent contractors.
What I have seen from my experience with Breakthrough Maths is that it gets messy. It’s very hard to standardise for 400+ tutors, whereas what we have done is just employed a few tutors and they’re trained to perfection in the Breakthrough Maths training programme every summer.
We teach to a standard and a consistency so every single month you can expect the same standard no matter what teacher it is. Delivering consistency and accountability, that’s what we provide really and that’s what moves the needle because the more practice you do, the more effective the tutoring is.
You’re not tied in
One of the key things I really instilled in Breakthrough Maths from the start was that you’re not tied to any contracts. On average most students will stay with us for six or seven months every year. I will often see students cancel their subscription and then come back a few months later because they are busy with school, with sports, with whatever.
With Breakthrough Maths you just pop us an email to cancel and we cancel immediately. You’re not caught for any fees and you’re not caught for any contracts. I think that’s so important for parents, giving them flexibility and delivering more value to parents ultimately.
What Do Parents Usually Compare?
When parents are looking at maths tutoring, they usually compare three options:
Private one-to-one classes can be excellent. I actually delivered one-to-one maths tutoring (or grinds as we call them in Ireland) myself while studying in University College Dublin and saw first-hand the impact they can have on students. The downside is cost. Most one-to-one lessons in the UK cost somewhere between £40 and £60 per hour, while some experienced tutors and teachers charge considerably more.
Small group tutoring sit somewhere in the middle. Students get access to a tutor and can ask questions, but the quality varies significantly depending on the provider.
Online programmes like Breakthrough Maths Tutoring are different. Instead of paying for one hour at a time, students get consistent support every week, access to recordings, notes, worksheets, testing, and a structured programme that runs throughout the school year.
In my experience, consistency beats intensity. One lesson before an exam rarely changes a student’s results. Four classes every week for months is where real improvement happens.
A lot of tutoring companies try to cover every subject.
We’ve deliberately taken a different approach.
For six years our entire focus has been maths. Every class, every worksheet, every tutor, every system we’ve built revolves around helping students improve their maths results.
I believe there is real value in specialisation. Instead of trying to be everything to everyone, we’ve chosen to focus on one subject and continually improve the experience for students studying that subject.
That focus is one of the reasons we now teach thousands of students and have accumulated so many positive reviews across Trustpilot and Google.
